This is a story familiar to all of us during the winter. Frequency and duration can vary but at some point in time, everyone seems to get sick. The infusion was quick and painless. I felt about the same during and immediately after the infusion as I did prior to it. However, I noticed the difference that evening and the next morning. Vitamin C is found mainly in fruits and vegetables, such as leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, green/red peppers, strawberries, or broccoli. Larger doses help more than smaller doses. The vitamin C has been shown to enhance T cell proliferation which can lyse infected cells and improve B cell synthesis of immunoglobulins to control inflammation. In addition, it inhibits over-activation to control tissue damage. It has a diverse role in maintaining and stimulating the immune system to help fight viral infections. Intestinal absorption and renal excretion limit the bioavailability of oral vitamin C, and bioavailability is reduced with stress, viral illnesses, alcohol intake, etc. Therefore, in times of illness, intravenous administration is the route to use.
No one wants to be sick. But, when you do get sick, you have two options – feel sorry for yourself and sit under a blanket drinking soup and watching Netflix and YouTube and just wait for symptoms to subside, or you can help your immune system fight the infection with an intravenous vitamin C infusion.
